Thatch roofing and repairs in Gauteng

New thatch installations, re-thatching, and targeted repairs on existing roofs - including leak tracing, ridge work and fire-retardant treatment.

Thatch done right lasts

A well-built thatch roof is not a maintenance problem - a badly built one is. Most of the failures we are called to are the same handful of causes: pitch too shallow for the region, a ridge that was never detailed properly, thatch laid too thin, or a repair that was patched over the symptom instead of the leak.

We install new thatch, re-thatch roofs that have reached the end of their life, and repair existing roofs where repair is genuinely the right answer. Where it is not - where the structure or the economics say convert - we will say so rather than sell you another decade of patching.

What we do

  1. 01

    New thatch installation

Full installations on new builds, lapas, entertainment areas and outbuildings - structure, thatch and ridge detailing as one scope.

  2. 02

    Re-thatching

Stripping and replacing thatch that has reached end of life, with the structure inspected and corrected while it is exposed.

  3. 03

    Leak tracing and repair

Finding where water is actually entering rather than where it appears inside, then repairing the cause.

  4. 04

    Ridge replacement

Ridges fail first. Replacing a ridge is routine work that frequently buys years on an otherwise sound roof.

  5. 05

    Fire-retardant treatment

Applied treatment where an insurer requires it or where you want the additional protection.

  6. 06

    Maintenance inspections

Periodic inspection and minor correction, which is how a thatch roof reaches its full life rather than half of it.

Who this is for

Two clients, one standard

For homeowners

If the roof is leaking, the first job is finding out why. We inspect before quoting, because a quote written from a phone description of a damp patch is a guess.

We will also tell you honestly where a roof is close enough to end of life that repairing it is money spent twice - including when the better answer is a conversion rather than more thatch.

For estates, lodges and venues

Thatch on a lodge, venue or estate common area is both an asset and a liability line. We work to a maintenance programme rather than call-outs, which is cheaper over a five-year view and considerably less disruptive to trading.

For managing agents, that means scheduled inspections, documented condition reporting across multiple structures, and repairs planned into low season instead of appearing in the middle of it.

Questions

What people ask us

How long does a thatch roof last?

It depends heavily on pitch, exposure, the quality of the original installation and whether it has been maintained. A well-built, well-maintained roof lasts a long time; a shallow, neglected one does not. An inspection will tell you where yours sits.

Can you repair rather than replace?

Often, yes - particularly where the problem is the ridge or a localised area. We inspect first and tell you which it is, including when replacement is the more economical answer.

Does fire-retardant treatment help with insurance?

Some insurers require it and some price for it. Check with your insurer or broker what specifically they want, and we will apply to that requirement.

Should I re-thatch or convert?

That is a cost and risk question rather than a taste one, and it turns on your insurer, the state of the structure and how long you plan to hold the property. We quote both where both are viable so you can compare them properly.
